Transportation Pulse Report 2023 – Welcome to the Platform Era

Bridging the gap between the transportation of today and tomorrow: insights into transformational trends, greater collaborations and new platform solutions

Supply chains have never been ‘normal’, because they have always been defined by uncertainty. But with inflation reaching its highest levels in decades, and megatrends looking to transform the way companies design and manage their supply chains, transportation is facing some of its biggest challenges yet.

So, it’s never been more important to stay informed about what’s going on in the world, and to make sure you are ready to respond quickly, intelligently and effectively to what might happen next.

Authored in collaboration with Adrian Gonzalez, Founder of Talking Logistics and President of Adelante SCM, the third edition of our annual Pulse Report is based on the views and experiences of industry leaders from around the world.

Our Transportation Pulse Report 2023 – Welcome to the Platform Era offers valuable insights and advice that will help bridge the gap between shippers, carriers and logistics service providers, and their solutions. Indeed, it highlights how these gaps offer opportunities to improve operational and financial performance, eliminate waste, reduce risk and uncertainty, and make the world a better place.

Six major themes emerge:

  1. Bridging the gap between transportation today and tomorrow

  2. A shrinking labor force

  3. Sustainability when making supply chain decisions

  4. Greater customer expectations

  5. Greater collaboration

  6. A new platform era

Greater collaboration

An October 2022 Indago survey found that nearly all respondents either “Strongly Agreed” (71%) or “Agreed” (25%) that for companies to address supply chain challenges more effectively, they need to collaborate more with their suppliers, customers, logistics service providers and other trading partners.

“If you haven't been collaborating with external partners during this ongoing supply chain crisis, then what have you been doing?” said one Indago supply chain executive. “I talk with my carriers every day about the market and where forecasts are showing a shift in direction; failure to do so would jeopardize our entire supply chain.”

Embracing new technologies

Transportation management platforms are the business equivalent of Facebook, connecting shippers, carriers, logistics service providers and other stakeholders. This enables them to execute business processes in more efficient, scalable and innovative ways.

For example, Transporeon’s Transportation Management Platform processes over 220,000 transactions per day, representing more than $48 billion of annual freight spend, across 145,000+ carriers, 1,300 shippers and 100 retailers connected to the platform.

These platforms bridge the gaps between trading partners, processes and applications. They also help overcome the barriers to collaboration to eliminate waste, reduce costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The most important thing we learnt in 2022? Putting the customer center stage.

Everything we think and do within the supply chain is from the customer backwards. As a manufacturer, our thinking used to be, ‘let’s make something and then sell it to the customer’. The reality is that we need to understand what the customer wants and then work their needs backwards into the supply chain. This also drives the digital elements [we need to provide for] our customers for them to better operate their business.
